£500 - £700
Gilded brass and enamel Wedding Belt Buckle. From the Soufli in the Evros region of Greece. Floral decoration and inlaid coloured stones (most missing). On the base and on the central part of each plate is a name that is attributed to the groom who commissioned the buckle. On the phineal a double headed eagle with crown and date of engagement -1812. The belt buckle was a gift from the groom to the bride during the engagement ceremony and was worn by young women until they had their first child. This is a fine example of a marriage buckle with signs of repair and wear due to age. It would be passed down through the generations
