Rare £1 'Error Coin' Could be Worth £££s

A rare coin with a manufacturing error is expected to sell for hundreds of times its face value in our upcoming Militaria & Collectables sale (Thursday 17th-Saturday 19th October) ...

£1 coins featuring the portrait of King Charles III, with bees and flowers on the reverse, first entered circulation in August this year. The size and shape of the new coin is the same as previously issued coins with the appearance of a gold ring around a silver circle - with the outside ring made of nickel-brass, and the inside being nickel plated brass alloy.

A few weeks ago, this single colour coin (pictured) was spotted in a bag of change by a Cumbrian postmistress - and it could be one of only a few, or even one of its kind to enter circulation.

Coins Valuer Jacques Tinkler, said: 'Coins with mistakes, so called "error coins" can be very sought after by collectors, and can include undated coins, and coins without denominations. So far we've not been able to find another example of this particular error and we anticipate it could be hotly contested by coin collectors.'

The coin is estimated at £500-£800 + auction fees - Lot 725 in the 17th-19th October Militaria and Collectables Sale at Ryedale Auctioneers
