The Victor Brox Collection
Posted On: 16 Apr 2024Collections of legendary blues musician Victor Brox to go under the hammer...
The remarkable personal collections of legendary blues musician Victor Brox, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 81, will be sold at Ryedale Auctioneers in Kirkbymoorside, near York, North Yorkshire, on Thursday 2nd May. The sale is to be filmed as part of the television series The Yorkshire Auction House (Really/STV).
“During his long career, Brox played with Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Janis Joplin, and had a love affair with Nico. Jimi Hendrix called Victor his ‘favourite white voice’, and he was a huge influence on a young Jimmy Page.” (Manchester Evening News)
Victor was raised in Droylsden, Greater Manchester. After travelling the world with his various bands, he returned there in 2005.
Victor was an enthusiastic collector of oddities and unusual finds, amassed during his lifetime of touring, including fossils, coins, antiquities, antique furniture, musical instruments, and more.
As well as items from Victor’s remarkable musical career, his personal and wide-ranging collections of artefacts will go under the hammer, including:
- a good collection of large fossilised fish
- ancient and historic coins
- 17th century and later furniture and artefacts
- collection of 18th century coffers
- furniture from Brox’s former French residence
- aboriginal items
Auctioneer and owner of Ryedale Auctioneers, Angus Ashworth, said:
“To say Victor was a keen collector is an understatement. He was a hoarder of treasures, with a deep and diverse interest in history.”
“When we visited the property, it was packed to the rafters. It it took multiple van loads to clear it all. I can see parallels between Victor’s musicianship and the way he went about his collecting. His output was eclectic and refused to be pigeon-holed into a single category. His passions for both music and collecting did not stop, right up until the end of his life.”
“It has been a privilege to catalogue Victor’s collections and I think we could see more than a few surprises along the way. A lot of the items have what we call cross-appeal, and we expect a lot of interest from music fans, as well as other collectors.”
Featured lot: Brian Eastwood Victor Brox custom guitar, build based on an early Fender but square/vintage style, circa 2000s, estimate £1000-£2000 + 28.2% buyer’s premium
