Bears for Beds - collection of Steiff teddy bears to be sold for charity

A collection of Steiff and Merrythought teddy bears will be sold at Ryedale Auctioneers in aid of children's bed poverty charity, Zarach, Yorkshire Housing's Charity of the Year, after the bears were gifted to the housing association. Yorkshire Housing is the biggest housing association based solely in Yorkshire, managing around 20,000 homes.

Leeds-based charity Zarach was founded by teacher Bex Wilson after she discovered some of her pupils did not have a bed to sleep in. Since then, Zarach has worked with schools across the region to deliver beds and additional family support as part of its mission to end child poverty. Yorkshire Housing is supporting the charity this year after fundraising in 2023 for Andy's Man Club, with donations totalling over £12,500.

The collection of bears is expected to fetch around £1,000 at auction and includes Steiff 'Del Boy' and 'Rodney' bears, Merrythought Paddington Bears, and bears commemorating the NHS, Royal British Legion, and Queen Elizabeth II.

The bears will be sold as part of Ryedale Auctioneers' Antiques, Interiors and Collectables Sale on Friday 2nd August.

The auction catalogue will be online the week before the sale. Live online bidding is available as well as bidding in person in the saleroom.
