Chinese 'Door of Hope' Dolls
These beautifully detailed handmade Chinese dolls are closely associated with the ‘Door of Hope’ Christian missions in Shanghai, active in the early to mid-20th century. The Door of Hope was an organisation that provided provide shelter, education, and support for orphaned girls.

The dolls were carved by local craftsmen and the girls made their clothing. They were used as a means of fundraising and raising awareness for the mission's activities.

The dolls’ costumes were based on traditional Chinese dress, and the characters created included a bride with embroidered robe and accompanying groom, a farmer, an adult doll with a baby in a sling, child dolls, and more – many of which are represented in this collection.

This collection was acquired by the vendor’s grandparents who lived China in the 1920s and 1930s. They are pictured in the original suitcase they were stored in when they were brought back to the UK.

Valuer Vanya, who catalogued the dolls, said: “These are absolutely beautiful. Door of Hope dolls don’t often come onto the market and are very popular with American buyers. They are even harder to find in this condition and we’re hopeful these will exceed their estimates.”

The dolls are included in our Friday 20th September Country House Sale (Lots 1244-1260).
